When summer opens, I see how fast it matures, and fear it will be short; but after the heats of July and August, I am reconciled, like one who has had his swing, to the cool of autumn.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Health and Wellness Break

Summer is winding down, and that can only mean one thing: the kids are headed back out to school or have already started. Back-to-school time is stressful for everyone, parents and kids alike. Whether you’re trying to make sure that your kids have everything they need for a successful school year or you’re navigating your child’s emotions over starting a new school or grade, we all have way more on our plates than we care to have.

Here are a few tips to get the year started on the right foot for everyone:

1. Take advantage of any open house or orientation that may be available. It’s a great way to get your child, as well as yourself, familiar with the teacher, school and/or classroom. Kids will also get to meet some of their new classmates or old friends, which will get them excited about the first day.

 2. Have conversations with your child about what they are looking forward to and what might worry them so you can work through all of it before the craziness starts. Remember that your most important job is listening, but it’s also great to be open and share your own feelings. You might not have all the solutions, but sometimes, all your child needs is to be able to express their feelings and hear themselves say it so they can work past it.

3. Talk about what changes to expect. Whether it be no more walking into school together but dropping off instead, or they need to practice crossing the street, or more homework because they’re moving on to a higher grade, everyone should be prepared.

4. Give your kids some autonomy to get them excited. Let them choose their own school supplies if you can, or their first-day outfit. If they hate the alarm, let them choose the sound or song they get to wake up to.

5. We all know this one, but yes, get everyone to bed early. Studies have shown that the most stressful time of the day for adults is school drop-off time. Your entire day is riding on getting everyone out and there on time. There’s lots of yelling and maybe even some tears that you always have to be prepared for, and some extra Zzz’s go a long way in helping with that.

May all your kiddos have a wonderful and successful school year!

Simple Everyday Life Hacks (Habits to Happiness)

“Get in the habit of never leaving a room without taking something with you, whether it’s an old coffee cup, a water glass, a newspaper, or a magazine. It’s kind of like a more intentional version of ‘clean as you go.’”  —Pamela Joy

“Whenever you can, pair two ‘good’ habits together. What I mean by that is: Every morning, I wait at the bus stop with my kid, and after they leave, I immediately go for a walk to get some steps in. I’m already dressed and outside, so it makes it super easy. I also take my medication immediately after I take my contacts out for the night. Then, I won’t forget whether I took the pills or not.”

“To combat lost socks, I have a separate mesh bag in which I put my socks as soon as I take them off. Since all I have to do is toss the mesh bag into the wash without opening it, I never worry that I’ll end up with missing socks.” —Leandra Lemly

This Day in History

August 1, 1790 – The first U.S. Census is completed. There are four million people in the in the U.S. at the time.

August 4, 1693 – Champagne is invented by Dom Perignon. I’ll drink to that!

A Little Humor Goes a Long Way

I bought a winter jacket at the store last August.
I got a really good deal because I bought it before it was cool.

Why do pirates hate May, June, July and August?
Because they don’t have Arrrrrs in them.

“Remember to be gentle with yourself

none can say why some fields will blossom
While others lay brown beneath the August sun.
