A monthly newsletter for our United Community.

By all these lovely tokens, September days are here. With summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.
Helen Hunt Jackson

September is here, bringing with it the transition from summer to fall and that cozy energy of earth tones, flannels, and yes, pumpkin spice. Also, football! We can enjoy the crisp mornings as we lament over our fantasy team’s bad luck. It’s still blow-dryer weather for most of us in the United family, but no need to overthink things. Set the mood, light the candles, and put out the pumpkin decor. Can’t let the rest of the country have all the fun!

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month to all in our United Family who are celebrating. This year’s theme is “Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America.” The contributions made to our country’s landscape by members of the Latino community are felt in our everyday lives and woven into the fabric of who we are as a nation.

Giving back

The Surprise Squad brings joy and cheer to the lives of individuals through random acts of kindness, but every now and then, something extra special happens. Sometimes, we get to impact someone in a completely life-altering way. Meet Violet, a young lady who has overcome countless obstacles to put herself on the path to a bright future. She put in the hard work and persevered through challenges, and the Surprise Squad stepped in to reward her handsomely. She will surely touch countless young lives because she didn’t give up on herself, and her community lifted her up when she needed it most.

Health and Wellness Break

Some days, you just don’t have it in you from start to finish. This is probably true for most days, sigh. What we don’t do, or we don’t have the luxury of doing, is to throw in the towel for the day because…life. So here are a few things we can do to set ourselves up for a good day or to pause and refresh. Be kind to yourselves, everyone.

1. Kickstart your morning with lemon water

Start every morning with a glass of water with fresh-squeezed lemon or lemon oil! (Make sure it’s an edible, 100% natural-grade oil, and not synthetic if you go the essential oil route.)

There are so many benefits of lemon water, but the main reasons to drink it are that it flushes your system of toxins, alkalizes your body, and keeps your digestive system working as it should.

This gives you more energy, fights inflammation, and provides an all-natural health boost that’s easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

2. Turn your commute into a chance to laugh

Nothing sucks the joy out of a day like sitting in traffic, but you can find a silver lining in any long commute, thanks to podcasts.

Laughing along to a funny podcast will help the time go by faster, help you decompress from work, and help you forget about the fact that you’re moving at a snail’s pace.

3. Use yoga to heal a headache

If you have a tension headache that just won’t go away, try yoga poses that are inversions, meaning they place your head below your heart.

Yoga poses for headache relief include downward-facing dog, child’s pose, and legs up the wall pose.

These poses will improve circulation, stretch out tense neck and shoulder muscles, and help you relax—all of which can help your headache go away faster.

3 Simple Everyday Life Hacks

This Day in History

September 2, 1752 – The British ended their use of the Julian calendar, switching instead to the Gregorian calendar, resulting in a major adjustment as Wednesday, September 2, was followed by Thursday, September 14. The correction resulted in rioting by people who felt cheated and demanded the missing eleven days back.

September 9, 1776 – The United States came into existence as the Continental Congress changed the name of the new American nation from the United Colonies.

A Little Humor Goes a Long Way

Why is it always warmer after a football game?
All the fans have left.

Why was the robot couple’s anniversary in the fall?
They were autumn mated.

Let August be August. Let September be September.
Let yourself just be even in the uncertainty.
And doing this doesn’t mean you’re not doing anything.
It means that you’re slowly learning to trust.
You can give your all in this life and also identify where enough is enough.”
