Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, we have had our summer evenings, now for October eves.
Humbert Wolfe

Yikes! Can you believe it? We have less than 100 days left in the year (76 to be exact), absolutely no clue where the time goes. Maybe a monster ate it, a very hungry one. If you’re not ready for Halloween, that’s okay. We have all the fall comfort foods to get us through our last-minute preparations. The amazing seasonal foods are definitely my favorite part about this time of the year.

Between school fall festivals, football, Halloween, visits to the farm, and Dia de los Muertos (not in October, but close enough), there’s so much fun to be had this month, and the weather is glorious – enjoy!

Spin your wheels with some trivia

Why do we celebrate Halloween on October 31?

September Trivia: What is different about September compared to every other calendar month?

Answer: September is special in that it’s spelled with 7 different letters and 9 total letters, numbers which correspond elegantly to both its root meaning and its calendar placement. No other month can do this trick.

Giving back

The wildfires in Maui left the people of Lahaina completely devastated. The recovery will be a long and difficult process, but the people there have true heart and grit, and we know they will build back stronger. The Surprise Squad and United Nissan were very happy to donate to the Salvation Army’s Maui Strong Relief Fund to give some assistance to the people of Lahaina.

Thank you to everyone in our United family; we hope you all know that if not for you and the work you do, our give-back program would not be possible. You make all the difference.

Health and Wellness Break

Good mental health is vital to our overall health and well-being because of its impact on our physical health, well-being, and how we connect with others.

As we observe World Mental Health Day on October 10, let’s look at how we can work on improving our mental health through mindfulness. Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to the present moment using methods like meditation, breathing, and yoga. It helps us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings so that, instead of being overwhelmed by them, we’re better able to manage them.

Here are a few simple mindful activities you can practice to help you in the moments when you’re feeling a little stuck:

1. Mindful Breathing: Take a minute to observe your breathing. Breathe in and out as you normally would, taking note of of the time between each inhale and exhale. When your mind begins to wander, bring your attention back to your breathing. This is a time to be present with yourself.

2. Mindful Eating: We know all too well the importance of our diet and what we put in our bodies, but it’s not only what you eat but how you eat that can place you in tune with yourself. Eating mindfully can take us out of autopilot and help us to enjoy the experience. Bring your full attention to the taste of your food; see it, smell it, feel it. It’s the habit of learning to appreciate the moment that can keep our minds from wandering to a place of unpleasantness.

3. Mindful Listening: Spend some time tuning into your environment and listen to what it tells you. This can help you to bring mindfulness into the rest of your life. Listen to the sounds you hear, absorb the experience of their quality, and how it makes you feel.

Here is your reminder that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so if you or a loved one is due for a mammogram, make that appointment.

This Day in History

October 2, 1967 – Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) was sworn in as the first African-American associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He served until 1991 and was known for opposing discrimination and the death penalty and for championing free speech and civil liberties.

A Little Humor Goes a Long Way

Why shouldn’t an angry witch take her broom trick or treating?

She might fly off the handle.

Who does a werewolf go trick or treating with?

His cousins What Wolf and When Wolf.

Is it allergies or something else?

As the weather cools down, germs spread more. The wind picks up, and our noses try to run away from us. So, is it allergies or something else? The US government is once again giving out free at-home rapid Covid-19 tests. Hop on the website and order some. Each household is entitled to 4 tests. Aside from being able to order the rapid home tests, individuals can also find out about low-cost or free PCR tests.

“I’ll take you and bake you,” she said.
And she gave it a pat. The
Pumpkin tried to look very scary.
But it just looked big and FAT.
