Meet. Learn. Share. Celebrate.
A monthly newsletter for our United Community.

“Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The shortest month of the year sure packs a mighty punch. Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, and Super Bowl weekend are all squeezed into one little month. We hope you all enjoyed the Super Bowl; whether it be the game itself, the food, or the company, there’s all kinds of fun to be had. Next up is Valentine’s Day, which is more like a week, because who can get a good reservation at a nice restaurant on Valentine’s Day?

So we go the day before, or the day after, or the weekend after. Whichever day you decide to celebrate, be in the moment. Black History Month serves not only as a reminder to lift up and celebrate contributions made to our society and country by the African-American community, but it can also be a time to learn something new about our nation’s history. For instance, did you know that President Gerald Ford formalized the celebration of Black History Month in 1976, decades after the idea was first introduced by Carter G. Woodson in 1915? The month of February was picked because it is the birth month of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.

There is so much more to learn, so go ahead and dive down that rabbit hole. History always has a way of helping us to understand the things we don’t.

Giving back

Meet Jeremiah, an amazing 10-year-old who went from his first form of communication being sign language to currently having his own YouTube channel where he does sports reporting and showing off his love and support for the Las Vegas Raiders. Thanks to the Surprise Squad and the Las Vegas Raiders, Jeremiah could live out a dream of meeting his heroes and, in turn, inspire those heroes with his own story of perseverance and incredible talent. There is so much we can learn from Jeremiah, and thanks to you all, our mission of giving back to the community and people like him can go on: WATCH HERE.

Health and Wellness Break

February is National Heart Health Month, and according to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease is the world’s number one cause of death. Over 17 million people die every year from heart disease. As the theme for the month says, it’s time to take up Heart-Healthy habits. Make a conscious effort to reduce your risk of heart disease by eating a healthy diet, incorporating some physical activity into most of your days, and tracking your cholesterol and blood pressure. Testing and keeping track of blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure can really help keep you accountable and take notice of red flags. In the month of love, we remind ourselves also to practice self-care and the greatest form of self-care is to take care of your health.

This Day in History

Nothing can be done.
